Sitting Consciously: Redefining Your Sitting Experience

We dedicate a significant 50% of our day to sitting—whether at work, in our cars, at home, or during leisure activities. Another 30% is spent sleeping. Unfortunately, our modern culture reinforces sedentary lifestyles, and even those who engage in regular exercise may be at risk. Recent research suggests that prolonged sitting, even for those who exercise regularly, may have adverse effects on health. Preliminary findings indicate a higher likelihood of weight gain, heart attacks, or even premature death (British Journal of Sports Medicine). A study tracking over 17,000 Canadians for about twelve years found that increased sitting time correlated with a higher risk of death, regardless of exercise habits.

The body is designed for health

Our bodies are genetically designed for health based on a blueprint that hasn't changed in over 40,000 years. This blueprint, rooted in our hunter-gatherer ancestors, contrasts sharply with our current sedentary lifestyle. While our ancestors moved vigorously, we expend less energy despite the unchanged need for movement.

Sedentary lifestyle = poor postural-movement habits

The consequences of our modern sedentary lifestyle are evident in poor movement and postural habits, leading to a rise in musculoskeletal and related conditions. Movement is crucial for overall health, with 50% of the nervous system wired for it. Think of movement as a nutrient, providing essential stimuli to higher brain centers orchestrating body functions.

The solution: change the way we sit

The solution to this growing epidemic is simple: change the way we sit. The evolution of office task chairs aims to support the body comfortably, with some causing the body to conform to them and others adapting to the body. However, the question remains: what does a comfortable position truly look like? From clinical experience, I've observed that the comfortable position is not always the most efficient, often leading to distorted and fixed postures over time. These poor movement patterns extend beyond sitting, affecting daily activities, exercise, and leisure.

Sitting consciously breaks poor postural-movement habits

Breaking these habits starts with conscious sitting, achieved through a simple and effective movement management program. This three-phase program equips you with the knowledge and skills to alter sitting habits during various daily activities. Imagine alleviating muscular tension and pain in the neck, middle back, and low back associated with prolonged sitting. Sitting consciously involves dynamic movements that restore and sustain your body's structural and functional integrity, enriching your life experience. Improve overall health, enhance physical performance, boost work productivity, and prevent potential injuries and disabilities with the simplicity and effectiveness of Movement Management.
